Overview
The Center for Computational Science and Engineering (CCSE) is part of a new transdisciplinary initiatives on the University of California, Davis, campus. Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) is a rapidly developing area with particularly strong connections to the sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
About CSE
Contemporary science and engineering confront problems at unprecedented levels of complexity and difficulty that transcend traditional mathematical and statistical methods. Progress in exploring and analyzing the large-scale, complex systems of current interest requires new computational tools and concepts. The discipline of CSE has emerged to directly address these challenges. As a response to these trends, the University of California, Davis’s CCSE is building a world-class CSE program by focusing its education and research activities on the uses of computational methods and the development of information-processing concepts as powerful tools for discovery, understanding, and design of complex multiscale nonlinear systems and their related mathematical structures.
CSE Research Areas
CSE involves diverse areas such as Monte Carlo simulations of random and stochastic processes; algorithm development for the analysis and datamining of massive and multidimensional data sets; numerical algorithms for a) the solution of differential equations, or b) the development of cellular automata approaches for characterizing a wide variety of physical phenomena having many scales in length and time, or c) simulating systems having fundamentally unobservable dynamics in science and engineering, or d) the study of emergent patterns and coherent structures in complex nonlinear systems; development of methods for the analysis of biomedical diagnostics; computational biology, including artificial neural networks and neurobiology models, and computational molecular biology; visualization and virtual reality rendering for the study of large and complex multidimensional structures; digital image analysis, compression, and transmission, including the use of wavelets, principal component analysis, maximum entropy and other information theoretic approaches; and computational techniques in relation to the study of discrete mathematics, including combinatorics and cryptography.
About CCSE
The CCSE at the University of California, Davis, is established within the Campus to support interdisciplinary education in computational science and engineering—including both undergraduate and graduate instruction and research—focused on the above challenges. Research and education in the discipline of CSE will prepare students for careers in this highly interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field by developing and extending expertise in the areas of Computational Methods, Theory, Processes, Environments, and Analysis. The CCSE intends to become a campus department, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in CSE. Cognizant of the trend to establish similar centers elsewhere, the CCSE will distinguish itself intellectually by assembling a faculty whose research focuses on complex systems. The CCSE’s role on Campus is integrative and will involve many disciplines. The CCSE will provide an environment that fosters dialogue between campus departments, programs, research units, and individual researchers concerned with complex systems. As a concrete measure to support this integration and interdisciplinary research on complex systems, the CCSE will provide to its Membership consulting and facilities for high-performance computing.
